  7. 07A mother who steals from a hospital fund to keep one child alive.
  8. 08A soldier who spares one village by reporting another.
  9. 09A journalist who publishes a true story she knows will get someone killed.
  10. 10A priest who keeps a confession that would free an innocent man.
  11. 11A scientist who accepts dirty funding and does genuinely good work with it.
  12. 12A union organiser who trades one department's jobs for the rest.
  13. 13A caretaker who keeps a patient sedated because the lucid hours are unbearable.
  14. 14A thief who returns everything to the wrong people on purpose.
  15. 15A guard who lets one prisoner out and locks the door behind them.

Root it

Gray only works when the reasoning is legible.

  • What rule do they follow instead of the one they broke?
  • What would they never do — and where exactly is that line?
  • Who paid for their last decision like this?
  • What version of the story do they tell themselves before sleeping?

Add pressure

  • Force them to choose the same way twice, when the second cost is personal.
  • Give the person they harmed a chance to speak, sympathetically.
  • Let a genuinely good character be harmed by their reasoning and stay loyal anyway.
