Root it

Pick one secret and push it into the character's history until it has a cause.

  • How old were they when it happened?
  • Who else was there, and where are they now?
  • What did keeping it quiet cost them the first year? The fifth?
  • What small behaviour did they invent to protect it?
  • Who would be destroyed by it — them, or someone they love?

Add pressure

A secret is only a plot once the conditions change.

  • Someone new arrives who was also there.
  • The secret becomes valuable to a person who doesn't like them.
  • Telling the truth would save a stranger and end their own life as they know it.
  • A document surfaces that they thought had been destroyed.
  • They are asked to publicly condemn exactly what they did.

Cross-pollinate

Give the secret a second person and it becomes a relationship.

  • One character knows, and has never mentioned it — why?
  • Two characters share the secret but remember it differently.
  • The person they are protecting doesn't want to be protected.
  • Someone is being blamed for it right now.

Propagate this idea

One secret can grow the rest of the story.

  • Secret → who benefits from the silence → a power structure.
  • Power structure → a law or custom that makes silence rational → worldbuilding.
  • Silence → the character's habits and speech patterns → voice.
  • Discovery → the scene you actually want to write → your inciting incident.
