20 Character Fears (And What They Do To Avoid Them)

Twenty fears written as behaviour — what the character is afraid of, and the life they've built so they never have to find out.

The 20 fears

  1. 01Being ordinary — so they only enter competitions they can win.
  2. 02Being known — so they are endlessly interested in everyone else.
  3. 03Being left — so they leave first, warmly, with a good reason.
  4. 04Being wrong in public — so they never commit to a position out loud.
  5. 05Becoming their parent — so they refuse every trait, including the good ones.
  6. 06Being a burden — so they are ill, tired and grieving alone.
  7. 07Being replaceable — so they make themselves the only one who knows how it works.
  8. 08Being still — so there is always a next thing before this one lands.
  9. 09Being seen wanting something — so they pretend every desire is a favour to someone else.
  10. 10Being owed — so they refuse gifts and over-tip.
  11. 11Losing control of the story — so they tell everyone's version first.
  12. 12Being loved conditionally — so they keep testing the condition.
  13. 13Being found out as untalented — so they never finish the real work.
  14. 14Being touched without warning — so they control every room's geometry.
  15. 15Being forgotten — so they carve their name into everything, quietly.
  16. 16Being the one who wasn't chosen — so they never let it come to a vote.
  17. 17Being needed too much — so they keep one bag packed.
  18. 18Being safe — because the last time they relaxed, it happened.
  19. 19Being outgrown — so they keep everyone slightly smaller.
  20. 20Being right about how bad it is — so they never check.

Seeds from this topic

character seed #041GERMINATING

A bodyguard who has never lost a client is quietly terrified of being alone in a room with no one to protect.

emotional

Root it

  • What is the earliest scene where this fear made sense?
  • What does the avoidance look like on an ordinary Tuesday?
  • Who has noticed and said nothing?
  • What lie do they tell themselves about why they live this way?

Add pressure

  • Make the thing they want most only reachable through the fear.
  • Have the avoidance strategy fail publicly, early.
  • Give them a character who is unbothered by exactly what terrifies them.
