16Writing notes
- Emotions do not have one universal body language. Use these as possibilities, not rules.
- Build from a character's baseline. A normally fidgety character becoming perfectly still may be more revealing than adding another nervous gesture.
- Use clusters of cues. Face + body + hands usually creates a stronger impression than relying on one gesture alone.
- Let emotions overlap. Fear can look like anger, grief can look like numbness, attraction can look like irritation, and relief can turn into tears.
- Masked emotion is often more interesting. Characters frequently hide, redirect, perform, or misunderstand what they feel.
- Use intensity deliberately. Subtle cues fit many scenes better than the most dramatic reaction.
- Avoid body-language lie detectors. Looking away, crossing arms, fidgeting, pupil changes, or touching the face do not automatically reveal deception.
- Account for individuality. Culture, disability, neurodivergence, trauma history, habit, personality, medication, environment, and physical condition can all affect expression.
- Don't repeat one signature cue for everyone. If every anxious character bites their lip and every angry character clenches a fist, the cast begins to feel interchangeable.
- Let context determine meaning. A character may cross their arms because they are defensive, cold, self-soothing, injured, or simply comfortable.
- Use contradiction for subtext. The body can say one thing while the dialogue says another.
- Notice what stops. A person who suddenly stops moving, smiling, talking, or making eye contact can be more expressive than someone who begins a dramatic gesture.
- Don't choreograph every emotion. Choose the cues that matter to the moment and let the reader infer the rest.
- Match expression to POV. Different observers may interpret the same facial expression differently.
- Avoid equating appearance with morality or intent. A blank expression, flat affect, unusual eye contact, scars, or atypical movement does not make someone cold, dishonest, dangerous, or uncaring.
