11Writing notes

  • Clothing should do more than decorate. Fit, condition, fabric, repetition, and context can reveal more than a list of fashionable pieces.
  • Describe selectively. Readers rarely need every garment from head to toe.
  • Use clothing through POV. A fashion-conscious narrator may notice tailoring and fabric; someone else may notice only that the coat is wet.
  • Avoid equating style with morality. Dark clothes do not make someone dangerous, expensive clothes do not make someone shallow, and disheveled clothes do not make someone incompetent.
  • Consider money without making it simplistic. Wealth can appear through tailoring, maintenance, ease, longevity, or invisibly expensive basics — not only logos.
  • Let clothing have history. Mending, fading, borrowing, inheritance, uniform wear, stains, and repeated pieces make wardrobes feel lived in.
  • Think about practicality. Weather, occupation, transportation, mobility, culture, setting, and activity all affect what someone wears.
  • Don't costume every character into an archetype. A person can love vintage dresses and work in finance, or wear black every day and be cheerful.
  • Use repetition. A favorite coat, necklace, shoes, or bag can become part of how readers recognize someone.
  • Let clothes change. Dressing differently for work, grief, a date, illness, wealth, poverty, hiding, celebration, or a new stage of life can show character development.
  • Watch brand-name overload. Specific brands can date a story quickly and often tell less than fit, quality, fabric, and condition.
  • Describe what's noticeable in the moment. Mud on expensive shoes may matter more than the designer of the trousers.
